The beach is also known as Gwakji Gwamul Beach. “Gwamul” means “sweet spring water emerging in the coastal areas.” As there were wells installed to reserve this water on this beach, it was named “Gwakji Gwamul (meaning “gwamul in Gwakji-ri Village).” Since Jeju is an island made of volcanic rocks, rainwater is not collected on the ground. Therefore, ancient Jeju residents, after finding out that the rainwater flows towards the shore where it emerges, devised a well to reserve the water and started using it as drinking and living water. Play on the beach, and experience catching shellfish in the cool spring water, and swim in the sea. An openair bath in Gwakji-ri Village, which is famous for providing longevity enjoyed by residents and its exceptionally clear water, will present you with a true healing experience.
