The biggest Korean island, Jeju-do is 141.6km south of Mokpo, 286.5km southwest from Busan, 255.1km west of Japan’s Daemado, and is located in the southernmost sea of Korea. It is a key point that connects Russia and China, and the oceanic area that contains Japan and Southeast Asia. It is a global vacation spot that is sought out by numerous tourists, attracted by its natural landscape gifted by nature.

Samdado, Jeju
Jeju-do is known as Samdado because it has an abundance of the following 3 things: rocks, wind and women. These are traits that are unique to Jeju, due to its geologic factors, environmental factors and cultural factors.

A volcanic island, Jeju has traces of prior volcanic activity throughout the island. One of them is the basalt. The basalt is an igneous rock with a vesicular texture which was formed at the time of a volcanic explosion, when the flowing lava met cold air or water, thus cooling rapidly. Only seen in volcanic areas, basalt is broadly dispersed throughout all of Jeju. For generations, Jeju residents have built stone walls, and constructed houses with stone fences - all using basalt. The dolharubang, which you may think of in relation to Jeju, is a smiling stone statue that is also made from basalt. The dolharubang has become the symbol of Jeju.

Jeju has been called the street corner of storms, and its residents have fought against the wind throughout the ages. The reason for this is because Jeju is an isolated island in the sea. The wind that blows throughout the year has influenced the living environment of Jeju. If you take a look at an old house in Jeju, there are stones placed on the roof so that the roof won’t fly off in the wind. The phonetics used in the Jeju vernacular, such as wang, gang, JJuh are abbreviated language with shortened endings, said to be influenced by the history of fighting against the fierce wind. In particular, Marado is famous for its rough vernacular, and the hypothesis is that this is due to the unusually strong winds in the region.

Many island residents fish for a living. The men went out to the sea to catch fish, and many died in shipwrecks while fishing. Naturally, this meant that the ratio of women to men grew larger. Also, because the living environment was rough, women had to go out and work alongside men. The large number of women not only refers to the actual population count, but also serves as a metaphor for the diligent life Jeju women have lived, cultivating Jeju’s barren land. What this really highlights are that Jeju’s many women, are the women divers who fish in the deep sea, once again, fighting against the rough waves.

Autumn Average Weather
Average temperature 16℃ / Rainfall amount 81mm
In Jeju, the typical autumn season begins from late September to early October. Due to the influence of migratory anticyclones, both morning and nighttime feel cool and the temperature goes up during the daytime due to sunlight, so several days show a big night and daytime temperature difference. The temperature is similar or higher than the annual average and rainfall amount is similar or lower than the annual average.
